New Buscentre Officially Opened in Ballyclare

A new purpose-built buscentre, which is benefiting public transport users and commuters from the Ballyclare area was officially opened today (Tuesday 12 Nov) by the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State and Minister responsible for Regional Development, Angela Smith MP.

The new buscentre stands on the site of the former Ballyclare railway station.  The new facility represents an investment of £260,000 in Ballyclare and is fully modern.  Key features include park & ride facilities for up to 20 vehicles, fully heated passenger waiting area, improved travel information displays, cycle racks, public toilets, CCTV, vending machines and a parent & baby room.

Following detailed consultation with Disability Action, the station is fully accessible and includes low-level ticket desks and telephone kiosks as well as an induction loop system.

Speaking at the launch of the station, Dr Joan Smyth CBE, Chairman of Translink said:
“This is an important development for the Ballyclare area – one which will help ensure our public transport system meets the needs of the travelling public in the 21st century. 

“It is almost a year since we launched our revised Passenger Charter and the opening of this new station further demonstrates our commitment to improving services across our network. We realise that reliability, punctuality, safety, comfort and value are all key areas of concern for Translink’s passengers and investment such as the refurbishment work carried out here today form an important part of our strategy to deliver for long term customer satisfaction.”

Ballyclare busccentre is the latest in a sustained programme of development by Translink.  Other recent achievements include bus and rail centres at Bangor and Coleraine; refurbishment of Carrickfergus station and the near completion new-look Belfast Central Station.  This process will be extended over the next 12 months to other key areas such as Downpatrick and Lisburn.

Referring to the programme, Ted Hesketh, Managing Director of Translink said:
